Alternative Middle and High School

The Alternative Middle and High School provides a structured, therapeutic environment for students whose emotional, behavioral, health, or learning challenges have impacted their abilities to be successful in traditional, public school classrooms. Many students benefit from high levels of academic support to remediate learning gaps as well as requiring smaller classroom sizes to regulate their behavior and form effective peer and adult relationships. Schedules are consistent, with frequent opportunities for breaks, both for engaging in preferred activities and/or checking in with clinicians and other support staff. The program model is based on the principles of positive behavior interventions and supports. Clinicians have a high level of involvement with students’ families, therapists, DCF or probation workers, and other community-based collaterals in order to best understand and support their emotional, social, and cultural needs.
