Autism Spectrum Disorders Program (ASD)

All classes in the ASD Program are located in public school buildings with same-age peers. The ASD Program offers self-contained classes that typically provide individualized programming with instruction in a 1:1 or 1:2 staff-to-student ratio. As students become more independent, programs may also include more instruction in small group settings. Therapy services are generally provided in the classroom to facilitate carryover by, and consultation with, the instructional staff. Common instructional strategies include:

  • Structured teaching approach with using the methodologies of Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA)
  • Visual supports and total communication approach
  • DIR Floortime with younger students
  • Sensory programming and/or occupational therapy techniques
  • Curriculum determined by IEP, aligned with Common Core/Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks
  • Middle and high school programs incorporate functional life skills, health and fitness, leisure, pre- vocational skills with a focus on independence, self-reliance, responsibility, and social maturity
  • Community outings and inclusion opportunities to the maximum extent possible
  • Strong Assistive Technology team
